God is love but God hates sin. He hates all sin. But there are some sins He hates even more than others.
Proverbs 6:16–19 (NASB)
16 There are six things which the Lord hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: 17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil, 19 A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers.
Haughty eyes
A lying tongue
Hands that shed innocent blood
A heart that devises wicked schemes
Feet that run rapidly to evil
A false witness who utters lies
One who spreads strife among brothers
The question is, why?
Why does God hates these particular sins so much?
We are going to examine each one of the seven things listed in Proverbs 6:17-19 and define exactly what they are and discover why God hates them so much.
If we claim to love God, we are going to hate these same things too and desire repentance and rescue from the things our loving God hates.
That means that we are going to hate these things in our own lives FIRST and hate the pain and suffering they cause us and those we love.
It also means we are going to hate what God hates in in our world and desire to respond to it the way God wants us to according to His word.
Last week we looked at “Haughty Eyes”, examining why God hates pride. Today we are going to talk about...

“A Lying Tongue”

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary:
LIE, noun
1. A criminal falsehood; a falsehood uttered for the purpose of deception; an intentional violation of truth. Fiction, or a false statement or representation, not intended to deceive, mislead or injure, as in fables, parables and the like, is not a lie
LIE, verb intransitive
1. To utter falsehood with an intention to deceive, or with an immoral design.
2. To exhibit a false representation; to say or do that which deceives another, when he has a right to know the truth, or when morality requires a just representation.
Proverbs 12:22 (NASB)
22 Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, But those who deal faithfully are His delight.
Everyone lies!
(2021 Gallup poll: 91% of people admit to lying on a regular basis)
We make excuses for lies. (We don’t want to hurt feelings)
We rationalize lies (“white lies”, “withholding information”)
We tell half truths (A half truth is a whole lie)
Schools are teaching lies.
The News Media spreads lies.
The overwhelming majority of politicians wouldn’t know the truth if it came up and slapped them in the face.
There are large numbers preachers and churches that spread lies.
God hates all those lies!
We don’t hates lies like we should. But we should and my hope and prayer is that after hearing and applying the message today, we all will.

God hates a lying tongue because of WHO He is.

Psalm 31:5 (NASB)
5 ...God of truth.

2 ...God, who cannot lie...

God hates lying because of WHERE it comes from.

44 “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
Revelation 12:9 (ESV)

1 Timothy 4:1–2 (NASB)
1 ...the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron...
It is demonic.
2 Corinthians 11:3 (NASB)
3 ...the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness...
Satan is crafty. He most often tells half truths so he an easily deceive.
Genesis 3:1–5 (NASB)
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’ ” 4 The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! 5 “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

God hates a lying tongue because of WHAT it does.
